The Ehime Museum of Art opened in 1998, following its predecessor, the Ehime Prefectural Museum of Art, which opened in 1970. We were in charge of the complete exhibition design for the “Yamakawa Collection Commemorative Exhibition: Photography: Past and Future”, which introduces approximately 120 photographs donated by Mr. Koichiro Yamakawa, a businessman in Ehime Prefecture.
The visuals were unified from the poster design to the flyer, tickets, invitations, and signage inside and outside the museum. The design, based on the viewfinder line of a camera, shows the composition, proportions, and angle of view that are essential to photography, and while the proportions change for each medium, care was taken to create a unified look. This exhibition is an extension of the Yamakawa Collection, and includes works by photographers associated with the prefecture who have been working in the artistic expression of photography up to the present day. The exhibition was designed in an academic and universal design and tone to provide an overview of the past and future of the art of photography in the prefecture.
The word “photography” is derived from the Greek word meaning “to draw with light. This special exhibition traces the history of the art of photography through a diverse range of domestic and international works that are indispensable to the history of photography.
