I have been teaching at Kagawa Junior College in Utazu-cho, Kagawa, as a part-time lecturer since 2018. At the college, also my alma mater, I teach package design and try to share my experiences as a professional designer with the students.
The photo above shows the award certificates I have designed for selected students who produced an excellent piece work in the class. The achievements of the top three students are honored with the certificates with a cylindrical structure which resembles a crown or podium. As I teach package design, I decided to adopt the three-dimensional and multifaceted viewpoint, characteristics of package design, to the design of the certificates. In the other words, the design is a reinterpretation of the normally flat object (a certificate). The light-hearted nature of student life is expressed in the somewhat humorous design. My intension was to conclude the teaching by awarding students with these. By presenting the certificates with the structure that deviate from the existing ones, I hoped that the students will be aware of the importance of developing broad perspectives and become designers who can play active roles interdisciplinary fields.
